news and events
While we don’t have specific statistics on the listed events, JKB shares some broader insights into the impact of such programs based on available data:
“Beyond compliance.”
Attending conferences can be a valuable experience for networking, learning, and engaging with professionals and leaders in the field of politics and public policy related to your business. To make the most of these events, follow a strategic plan:
1. Plan Ahead:
Review the event schedule and identify sessions, workshops, and keynotes you want to attend. Zero in on one-to-two things you don’t want to leave without having accomplished.
2. Set Clear Goals:
Define your objectives for attending the event. Are you looking to network, gain knowledge, or promote a specific cause or issue, get leads?
Identify the individuals or groups you want to connect with during the event. Don’t expect to do everything. The conference is designed to hit all the needs of their audiences, so if you only get to 10% of the offerings, you’re still likely to have made the trip and time worth it.
3. Network Effectively:
Bring a stack (½-inch thick) of business cards (electronic device card sharing is seamless and sexy, but you’ll have to be more laser focused to pull that information back up without the prompt of a business card) and be prepared to exchange contact information with fellow attendees.
Attend networking events, such as receptions, breakfasts, and luncheons, to meet and interact with other participants. See our newsletter article: “Networking for introverts.”
4. Be Informed:
Stay updated on current political and policy issues, particularly those relevant to the Black and Puerto Rican communities in New York State. Stay informed about the latest legislative initiatives and bills.
Prepare thoughtful questions for speakers and panelists to engage in meaningful discussions.
5. Engage with Keynote Speakers:
If possible, participate in Q&A sessions to ask questions or share your perspective.
Spot the people giving Keynote Addresses and position yourself strategically so that when they exit the side entrance, you are (accidentally) in their path to greet them even briefly.
6. Actively Participate:
Volunteer for any event-related activities if you have the time and willingness to contribute.
7. Follow Up:
Continue the conversation and collaboration with individuals or organizations that align with your goals. Don’t worry about apparent non-alignments, they may know an ally who’s not a direct connection.
8. Promote Your Message:
Use social media to share your experiences and insights from the event, and engage in online conversations related to the Caucus Weekend.
9. Stay Informed:
10. Reflect and Plan for the Next Year:
Remember that the key to a successful event or conference experience is not just attending but actively engaging with the community, learning, and building meaningful relationships.
